Quick answer
- Best window: May to October — the drier Austral winter with steadier south-east trade winds.

- Shoulder sweet spots: May, June, September, October — same settled weather, better availability, softer rates.
- Book: at least 6 months before you sail; 9 months for July–August.
- Vessel: shallow-draft sailing catamarans dominate here.
- Rates: crewed catamarans run roughly $29,000–$96,000/week; larger motor yachts run from around $60,000 up to $420,000/week, plus APA.

When should you book a Tahiti crewed charter?
For most guests, charter the Society Islands between May and October, and start your booking at least 6 months before you sail. That is Tahiti’s drier season — steadier trade winds, calmer lagoon passes, and the cleanest version of a Leeward Islands route through Taha’a, Huahine and Bora Bora. The wet season, November to April, is warmer and cheaper but brings more rain, higher humidity, and a rare cyclone risk from December to March.
July and August are the peak. If those are your only dates, reserve 9 months before you sail, because the fleet here is small and the best crewed catamarans go early. If you have flexibility, the shoulder months — May, June, September, October — give you almost identical weather with better availability and softer pricing.

Dry season vs wet season: what it changes onboard
The seasonal split matters more here than in most tropical destinations, because it decides how comfortable your passages and anchorages are. In the dry months the south-east trades are steady and predictable, which makes the crossings between Raiatea, Taha’a, Huahine and Bora Bora settled and the lagoon anchorages calm. This is the window a professional crew wants to work in.
| Season | Best for | Not ideal for | Rates |
|---|---|---|---|
| May–Oct (dry) | Settled crossings, whale season, provisioning quality | Anyone wanting quiet anchorages and low prices | Peak / higher |
| Nov–Apr (wet) | Warmth, softer pricing, shorter booking lead | Rain-sensitive trips, storm-averse guests | Softer |

Why July and August fill first
Two things pile demand onto the same eight weeks. The Heiva i Tahiti cultural festival runs through July, and humpback whales arrive in the passes from August into October. Both are genuine reasons to be here — but they collide with school holidays and a fleet that is far smaller than the Caribbean or Mediterranean.
That scarcity is the real driver of Tahiti’s pricing. There simply are not many crewed catamarans in the region, so when demand peaks, the good boats are gone and rates climb. If you want a specific vessel for July or August, treat 9 months before you sail as the deadline, not the ambition. For a broader look at the region, our French Polynesia charter guides cover routes and vessels in more depth.
What a Tahiti charter actually costs
Use real fleet numbers, not rounded guesses. The crewed catamarans we place in Tahiti run from roughly $29,000 to $96,000 per week before expenses. Larger crewed motor yachts start higher — from around $60,000 and up to $420,000 per week — reflecting their greater size, speed and interior volume rather than a cheaper option. On top of the base rate, expect an APA (advance provisioning allowance, refunded if unspent) of 20–25% on sailing yachts and 30–35% on motor yachts, plus a 5% French Polynesia charter tax and a crew gratuity of 15–20%.
One genuine advantage: French Polynesia charges no VAT on charter fees for international visitors, which makes it one of the more tax-efficient Pacific destinations. Provisioning, though, is expensive because so much is imported — budget generously and let the crew source what the season allows. To see the crewed catamarans and motor yachts we currently place in the region, our crewed catamaran and luxury motor yacht listings are the fastest starting point, and we will match a vessel to your dates and party once we talk.
Daniel Asmus, Owner, Charter Broker, Active CYBA Member, IYBA, ECPY at DMA YachtingWhich boat, and how long to plan for
Catamarans win here for a practical reason: their shallow draft is what lets you navigate the lagoon passes and atoll anchorages of the Society Islands and the Tuamotus. A well-appointed crewed sailing catamaran is comfortable for a family or a group without moving up to the size and cost of a motor yacht, which is why they make up most of what we place in the region. We will confirm which specific vessels are genuinely licensed and available for your dates rather than pointing you at a boat that may not hold its “Grande Plaisance” permit.
For a first charter, plan on at least 10 nights. That gives you a focused Leeward Islands loop from Raiatea — Taha’a, Huahine and Bora Bora — without rushing, and leaves room to fold in Moorea, with its sharper mountain relief, at the start or end when the charter sits near Tahiti. If you want to add the Tuamotu atolls, budget more days again. Anything shorter than 10 nights rarely justifies the long flights to get here.
FAQ
How far in advance should I book a Tahiti crewed charter?
At least 6 months before you sail for most dates, and 9 months ahead for July and August. The fleet is small and the best crewed catamarans commit early, so late enquiries in peak season usually mean compromising on the boat.
Is the wet season worth considering?
Yes, if you want warmth and softer pricing and can accept more rain and humidity. Showers are usually brief, and a cyclone is rare but possible from December to March. We would not build a rain-sensitive trip around November to April, but it can work for flexible travellers.
Sailing catamaran or motor yacht in Tahiti?
A sailing catamaran for most guests. Shallow draft is what makes the lagoon passes and atoll anchorages accessible. Motor yachts suit larger groups wanting more speed and interior volume, at a higher rate.
Can I anchor inside Bora Bora lagoon?
No. Anchoring inside Bora Bora is prohibited — only mooring balls and docking are permitted. A crewed yacht handles this for you, but it is one reason mooring fees appear in your APA.
How long should a first Tahiti charter be?
Plan on at least 10 nights for a focused Leeward Islands route from Raiatea, with room to add Moorea. Budget more days again if you want to reach the Tuamotu atolls. Shorter than that rarely justifies the long flights to get here.
