French Polynesia Yacht Charter

Moorings Tahiti vs. Private Charter: Which Is Right for You?

Quick answer

  • Most guests should book a private crewed catamaran: shallow draft and stability suit the Society Islands lagoons around Bora Bora, Taha’a and Moorea.
  • Moorings-style bareboat fits confident sailors on a budget who want to run their own boat from the Raiatea base and don’t need crew.
  • Book a motor yacht if your route reaches the Marquesas or you want a fully looked-after trip with no work involved.
  • 7 nights is the sweet spot for a first charter; 10 to 14 nights if you want proper time in Bora Bora and quieter atolls.
  • Go May to October for the drier, steadier trade-wind season.
  • Verify the yacht’s local charter licence before you pay — an unlicensed boat in French Polynesia is a real risk.
“The mistake I see most often is clients booking Tahiti in November thinking they're beating the crowds — technically true, but you're also stepping into the wet season, and a squall between Raiatea and Taha'a is not the honeymoon moment anyone planned for. May through October, the trade winds are steady and the visibility for diving around Fakarava is extraordinary.”

The short version

For most guests chartering French Polynesia, we recommend a privately arranged, fully crewed catamaran over a Moorings-style bareboat. You get a captain who knows the coral passes, a chef, and the freedom to change your route mid-week without navigating an unfamiliar lagoon yourself. The bareboat wins on one thing only: price, and only if you have the sailing experience to skipper it.

Moorings is a well-known brand with a large bareboat and crewed presence built around the Raiatea base in the Leeward Islands. That base is a genuine advantage. But it also means a standardised fleet and a set product. A private charter lets us match you to a specific boat and crew, which matters more here than people expect.

Moorings vs private charter, side by side

Option Best for Not ideal for Typical cost
Moorings bareboat Experienced sailors who want to skipper their own boat around Raiatea and Taha’a First-timers, honeymooners, anyone who wants to be looked after Lowest, but you crew it yourself
Private crewed catamaran Families and couples touring the Society Islands lagoons Guests wanting maximum indoor space or long ocean passages From roughly $9,500 to $96,000 per week
Private crewed motor yacht Marquesas routes, larger groups, full-service comfort Tight budgets and pure lagoon-only trips From roughly $25,000 to $420,000 per week
“Raiatea is one of the best catamaran bases in the entire Pacific, so unlike a lot of destinations where clients have to compromise on vessel type, in French Polynesia I can actually match a family of six to a well-crewed cat in their budget — we have options running from under $10,000 to well over $90,000 a week depending on how private and how luxurious they want to go.”

Who it fits

Who each option actually suits

A Moorings bareboat makes sense for a couple or two experienced sailing friends who genuinely want to helm the boat, read the wind, and moor at Taha’a on their own terms. If sailing itself is the point, this is the cheaper, more hands-on route. It is the wrong choice if nobody aboard holds real qualifications, because the coral passes in the South Pacific are not forgiving of guesswork.

A private crewed catamaran suits the family of six with teenagers, or two couples who want to swim, dive Fakarava’s passes, and eat well without touching a winch. This is the format most of our French Polynesia clients choose. A crewed motor yacht is for larger groups, guests who want full service, or anyone whose route pushes north to the Marquesas.

The tradeoffs that actually matter

The choice flips on four things. First, coral navigation: the Society Islands lagoons and the Tuamotu atoll passes reward a captain who has run them before. Second, comfort at sea: a power catamaran gives you shallow draft and steady indoor-outdoor living for lagoon days, while a motor yacht handles the longer, more exposed passages toward Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa.

Third, pricing clarity. A private charter is quoted as a base rate plus an advance provisioning allowance for fuel, food and dockage, so you see the real all-in cost before you commit. Fourth, customisation: private means the route, the pace, and the anchorages are yours to change. If Bora Bora is busy, you move.

Before you pay a deposit, confirm the yacht holds a valid French Polynesia charter licence. Boats do relocate into the region ahead of getting licensed, and one operating without it is a genuine problem for your trip.
“My clients who choose a fully crewed private charter over a bareboat or flotilla almost always say the same thing afterward — having a captain who knows the pass timings into the Tuamotu atolls like Rangiroa is the difference between a drift dive of a lifetime and sitting outside the reef waiting for conditions to change.”

Which boats we put forward

For a classic Leeward Islands route from Raiatea, we lean on well-run crewed catamarans. CATALYST is a 4-cabin, 18-metre catamaran from around $57,000 to $60,000 per week, a good fit for a family or two couples wanting a settled lagoon cruise. BLUE GRIFFIN, a 4-cabin Lagoon at roughly $43,000 per week, sits at the more accessible end.

If you want the larger, more finished catamaran experience, ARKTOS is a 4-cabin, 23.8-metre boat from $70,000 to $96,000 per week. Bigger power catamarans like these generally can’t be run bareboat, which is one more reason guests who want that class end up on a crewed charter. You can browse the wider French Polynesia fleet or filter by yachts under $60k to see where your budget lands.

FAQ

Is Moorings the only way to charter in Tahiti?

No. Moorings is a large branded operator with a strong Raiatea base, but plenty of independent crewed catamarans and motor yachts charter in French Polynesia. A private booking gives you a specific boat and crew rather than a standardised fleet vessel.

Bareboat or crewed for a first French Polynesia trip?

Crewed, unless you are a qualified sailor who wants to skipper. A captain who knows the coral passes and a chef aboard remove the two hardest parts of a first charter here, and let you focus on Bora Bora, Taha’a and the Fakarava dives.

When is the best time to charter?

May to October, the drier season with steadier trade winds and less humidity. November to April is warmer but brings more rain and the occasional storm, so we steer most first-time guests toward the dry window.

How long should the charter be?

7 nights is the sweet spot for a first trip, usually a focused Leeward Islands loop from Raiatea. Book 10 nights for a relaxed pace with proper time in Bora Bora, or up to 14 for an unhurried Society Islands itinerary.

Catamaran or motor yacht?

Catamaran for the Society Islands: shallow draft and stability suit lagoon cruising. Motor yacht if your route reaches the Marquesas, where range and comfort handle the longer, exposed passages better.
