Quick facts
- Best for: adventure-led guests who want raw, untouched wilderness over beach clubs and marinas — and the flexibility to let weather reshape the day.
- Start point: Ushuaia, Argentina for the Beagle Channel; Ushuaia to Puerto Montt, Chile for the full Chilean Fjords route.
- Ideal length: 5–7 nights for the Beagle Channel; 10–14 nights for the full Chilean Fjords.
- Best yacht type: a well-equipped catamaran works for the Beagle Channel; the Chilean Fjords need an expedition motor yacht with real range and strong tenders.
- Price level: catamarans from around US$9,500–$85,000/week, motor yachts from US$20,000 to US$275,000+/week, plus roughly 30–55% for APA, fuel and gratuity.
- Best season: November to March, with December–February the peak.
Patagonia is expedition cruising at the far southern tip of South America: glacier-front anchorages, fjords few yachts ever reach, kayaking off the tender, and hiking ashore between sailing legs. The wind and the rawness are the point here, not a flaw to be managed away.
Two very different routes carry the Patagonia name, and your available days decide which one fits — not the other way around.
Beagle Channel vs. Chilean Fjords
For most first-time guests, we recommend the Beagle Channel out of Ushuaia. It delivers glaciers, wildlife and dramatic scenery inside a 7-night charter, without committing you to long open-water passages. The signature run is Glacier Alley, where five tidewater glaciers — Holanda, Italia, Francia, Alemania and Romanche — descend from the Darwin Ice Field and calve into the channel. A well-equipped catamaran handles this route comfortably.
We only steer clients toward the full Chilean Fjords route when they have 10 days or more and genuinely want isolation over convenience. A typical 11-day itinerary runs Ushuaia to Puerto Montt, threading the Beagle Channel, the Darwin Range, the Strait of Magellan and Glacier Alley in one passage — and pairs naturally with an overland leg to Torres del Paine. This route needs an expedition motor yacht with real range; you’ll be far from fuel and support.

When is the best time to visit?
The season runs November to March, and December to February is the peak — the warmest, longest-light stretch, when the fjords, the Southern Ice Field glaciers and the Beagle Channel all line up reliably with active wildlife ashore. Magellanic penguins are ashore breeding from early October to late March; wildlife is strongest in February.
November and March cut rates 20–30% and ease the wind, at the cost of cooler days. We would not build a first Patagonia trip around the southern winter (April–September) — the cruising fleet relocates elsewhere and daylight collapses.
What does a Patagonia charter cost?
On the boats we place for the Beagle Channel, catamarans run from $9,500 to $85,000 per week and motor yachts from $20,000 to $135,000+, before expenses. Chilean Fjords expedition motor yachts run higher still, with some over $275,000/week at peak. Budget an APA of roughly 30–40% on top for fuel, provisioning and onboard costs — motor yachts sit at the higher end because of fuel burn — plus crew gratuity, for 50–55% over the base rate all-in.
Chile does not distinguish between private and charter yachts for tax, so there is no charter-specific tax here — though immigration rules can affect your itinerary depending on guests’ nationalities and length of stay.
Best yacht fit
Vessel choice is the real decision in Patagonia. The Chilean Fjords need an expedition motor yacht with good range and reliable tenders. The Beagle Channel is more forgiving, and a well-found catamaran handles it comfortably. Both routes need crew who know glacial tender operations — approaching ice floes and glacier faces safely is not a casual skill, and it matters more on the longer Chilean route, where self-sufficiency is the whole game.
Do not book Patagonia expecting a fixed itinerary. The good crews here plan around weather windows, not calendars — a rigid route looks fine on paper and becomes a problem the first time the wind shuts a glacier approach.

Patagonia vs. the alternatives
If you’re weighing Patagonia against the other great southern expedition, our Patagonia vs Antarctica guide sets out the tradeoffs directly — both depart from the same region, and some guests combine the two. If the choice is between Patagonia’s fjords and Norway’s, our Chilean Fjords vs Norwegian Fjords guide compares the two cold-water grounds directly.
FAQ
How far in advance should I book a Patagonia charter?
Book 6 to 12 months before you sail, and longer if your dates fall in the December-to-February peak. The fleet suited to these waters is small, so the best yachts and weeks go early.
Can I combine the Beagle Channel and Chilean Fjords in one charter?
Yes. An 11-day Ushuaia to Puerto Montt itinerary links both, taking in the Beagle Channel, the Darwin Range, the Strait of Magellan and Glacier Alley. It’s the strongest option if you have the time.
Can I see penguins on a Patagonia yacht charter?
Yes, within the season. Magellanic penguins are ashore breeding from early October to late March, which lines up with the cruising window. Outside those months they are at sea and inaccessible.
Do I need a motor yacht or is a catamaran fine?
For the Beagle Channel, a well-equipped catamaran is comfortable. For the Chilean Fjords, we recommend an expedition motor yacht with real range and strong tenders, because you’ll be far from fuel and support.
