French Polynesia Yacht Charter

What Does a Crewed Tahiti Sailing Charter Actually Include?

Quick answer

  • What you get: The whole catamaran or motor yacht plus a captain, chef and (on larger boats) a deckhand — not a boat you steer yourself.
  • All meals aboard: Chef-cooked, usually including local poisson cru, plus snorkel gear, kayaks, paddleboards and the dinghy.
  • Base fee vs total: Add an APA (Advanced Provisioning Allowance) of 30–35% on top of the base rate for fuel, food, moorings and shore costs.
  • Where you sail: The Leeward Islands from Raiatea — Taha’a, Huahine and Bora Bora — plus Moorea near Tahiti.
  • Confirm the licence: Every crewed charter yacht must hold a valid Grande Plaisance licence to operate in French Polynesian waters.
  • Best window: May to October, the dry Austral winter, with steady 15–20 knot trades.
“The entry point I tell clients to anchor on is around $15,000 a week for a crewed catamaran — that gets you four or five cabins, two crew, and real passage-making between Raiatea and Taha'a or across to Moorea; anything advertised below that in French Polynesia, I'd be asking hard questions about what's actually included.”

DAWN — crewed yacht charter in tahiti

A fully crewed Tahiti charter means you book the entire yacht and its crew — the captain plans the passages, the chef cooks every meal, and you set the pace. This is the opposite of a bareboat, where you skipper yourself, and it’s why so many people searching “moorings tahiti” or “tahiti sailing” end up confused: most of that content is written for people who want to helm their own boat.

For nearly all our clients heading to the Society Islands, we recommend a crewed catamaran. Shallow draft gets you into the lagoons, the twin hulls sit flat at anchor, and the indoor-outdoor deck living suits the way you actually spend time here. A bareboat is cheaper on paper, but it becomes a project the moment you hit the passes and moorings of Bora Bora.

The crew

Who is aboard and what they do

The crew is the single most important factor in whether the week works — more than the boat’s age or spec. On a mid-size catamaran you’ll have two crew: a captain and a chef/host. On larger vessels a deckhand joins to run tenders and water toys.

The captain handles passage planning across the Leeward Islands, reads the reef passes, and secures moorings — which matters because anchoring is banned in Bora Bora. The chef provisions in Papeete or Raiatea and cooks everything from grilled mahi-mahi to poisson cru with fresh Taha’a vanilla. You get flexible scheduling: linger a day at a Taha’a coral garden, or move on if the light’s better elsewhere.

Crew quality varies enormously. Tell your broker how you want the week to feel — energetic and dive-heavy, or slow and private — so the right captain and chef are matched to you, not just the nearest available boat.
“People underestimate how catamaran-friendly this fleet actually is — Raiatea is one of the best-supported cat bases in the Pacific, so unlike some destinations where you're hunting for a decent sailing vessel, here the sailing catamaran is genuinely the workhorse of the charter fleet and the right tool for island-hopping the Society Islands.”

What the base rate includes — and what it doesn’t

The base charter fee covers the yacht, the full crew, insurance, and the standard kit: snorkel and fishing gear, two kayaks, floating hammocks, a dinghy, and on the better boats paddleboards, air-conditioning, a water-maker and a Nespresso machine. Most itineraries include all meals aboard, though some plan for a couple of dinners ashore.

What the base rate does not include is the operating cost, and this is where first-timers get caught out. French Polynesia charters carry an APA — an Advanced Provisioning Allowance — of 30–35% of the base fee, higher than the Caribbean’s 25% because provisioning and fuel are more expensive this far out.

  • APA covers fuel, all food and drink, moorings, customs and shore excursions — unspent APA is refunded.
  • A 5% tax and service fee applies to the gross charter rate.
  • Bora Bora moorings run about 4,000 XPF (~$40) per night since anchoring is prohibited.
  • Gratuity is separate — French Polynesian crews commonly expect 17–25%. Budget for it upfront.
Good news on tax: French Polynesia levies no VAT on charter fees for international visitors, which makes it one of the more tax-efficient charter regions in the Pacific.

What a crewed week actually costs

The real fleet we place clients on in Tahiti spans a wide band. Crewed catamarans start around $15,000 per week for a large 4–5 cabin boat with two crew, and run up through the high-quality 65–80 foot range at roughly $60,000–$100,000. Motor yachts stretch far higher — from about $9,000 a week at the entry end to over $400,000 for the largest vessels. Remember to add the 30–35% APA on top of any base figure.

For a first charter, three boats give a sense of the range. DAWN, an 18.3 m catamaran with four cabins, sits in the mid-tier from around $40,000 a week. CATALYST, a Fountaine Pajot Samana 59 heading to French Polynesia, runs from about $51,000. At the top, BUNDALONG, a 24.4 m catamaran, starts around $85,000. Browse more options on our yachts under $60k and under $100k pages.

Don’t compare a low-season quote against a high-season one for the same boat. Peak (June–August) costs more across the board; the April–May and September–October shoulders bring fewer boats in the lagoons and softer rates.
“My strongest advice on timing is simple: lock in the dry season window, May through October, if steady trade winds and manageable seas matter to you — the wet season from November onward is warmer but you're accepting real variability, and in a place like the Tuamotus where the passes into atolls like Fakarava demand precise conditions, that's not a gamble worth taking to save a few weeks' rate.”

Why crewed beats a resort or bareboat here

Put the numbers side by side and the crewed yacht stops looking like an extravagance. An overwater bungalow at the Four Seasons or St. Regis Bora Bora runs $1,750–$8,000 a night for one room in one location. A crewed catamaran gives your whole group meals, crew, water toys and a moving address — you wake in a different lagoon each morning.

Option Best for Not ideal for Typical cost
Crewed catamaran Families/groups wanting to move between islands with no logistics Solo travelers on a tight budget $15k–$100k/week + APA
Bareboat Experienced sailors who want to skipper Anyone unsure of the reef passes $3k–$8k/week
Overwater resort One-island stays, spa-focused couples Seeing more than a single lagoon $800–$8k/night
Before you sign anything, confirm the yacht holds a current Grande Plaisance charter licence. We’ve seen good boats relocate to French Polynesia without one yet — chartering an unlicensed vessel is a real risk, not paperwork trivia.

FAQ

How long should a first Tahiti charter be?

7 nights is the sweet spot for a first charter — enough to run the Leeward Islands loop from Raiatea through Taha’a, Huahine and Bora Bora at a relaxed pace. Go 10–14 nights if you want a dive-heavy program or plan to reach the Tuamotu atolls like Fakarava and Rangiroa.

When is the best time to sail in Tahiti?

May to October, the dry Austral winter, gives you 15–20 knot trade winds, calm lagoons, temperatures around 26–29°C, and humpback whales in the passes. The November–April wet season is warmer but brings more rain and occasional storms.

Are meals really all included?

Yes — the chef cooks breakfast, lunch and dinner aboard, paid for out of the APA rather than the base fee. Many itineraries build in a couple of dinners ashore so you can try island restaurants, so confirm the exact meal plan with your broker.

Catamaran or motor yacht for the Society Islands?

For most guests, a crewed catamaran — the shallow draft and flat, stable decks suit lagoon cruising far better. Choose a power catamaran or motor yacht if you want more speed between islands or a larger platform, and expect a higher fuel component in the APA.

How far ahead should I book?

Well ahead — French Polynesia is a supply-constrained region and the crewed fleet is small. For a peak June–August week we’d want to be reserving boats 12 months or more before you sail. If your trip is less than six months away, talk to us early so we can see what’s genuinely still open.
