Society Islands by Crewed Yacht: Which Atolls Are Worth It?

Quick answer

  • First-timers: Bora Bora, Taha’a and Raiatea — the Leeward Islands loop, easy hops, reef-protected lagoons.
  • Best yacht: a crewed sailing or power catamaran — shallow draft and stability suit lagoon cruising.
  • Best season: May to October — drier, steadier trade winds, cleanest charter conditions.
  • Embark from: Raiatea for a focused Leeward route; Pape’ete (Tahiti) if you also want Moorea.
  • Don’t mix: Leeward Islands and Tahiti/Moorea in one week — the passages are too long.
  • Book early: the suitable fleet here is small; secure July and August 12+ months before you sail.
“The question I get most is whether catamarans in French Polynesia are worth it over a motor yacht — and honestly, for the Society Islands, a sailing cat out of Raiatea is often the smarter call; the anchorages around Taha'a and Bora Bora are made for them, and you'll find solid options starting well under $50,000 a week if you know where to look.”

Which Society Islands are worth a crewed charter?

For most guests, the answer is the Leeward Islands loop: Raiatea, Taha’a and Bora Bora, with Huahine added if you have the time. These are volcanic high islands ringed by reef-protected lagoons — not low coral atolls — so the cruising is sheltered, the anchorages are calm, and the hops between them are short and rewarding.

One thing to clear up: the Society Islands aren’t atolls. The water-first, ring-of-reef atoll experience belongs to the Tuamotus — Fakarava and Rangiroa — which is a separate, more committing trip built around diving. If your dream is a lagoon framed by green volcanic peaks, you want the Societies. If it’s drift-diving a pass full of sharks, that’s the Tuamotus.

The core route

The Leeward Islands loop, island by island

Bora Bora is the centerpiece — the silhouette everyone pictures, intense blue lagoon, dramatic volcanic relief. It earns its reputation, but it’s also the busiest anchorage in the region. Two or three nights is right; build the rest of the trip around it rather than parking there.

Taha’a is the quiet counterweight — a calm, lived-in lagoon island with vanilla and pearl farms, shared with Raiatea inside one reef. This is where guests often relax most. Raiatea is the usual embarkation point and the cultural heart, home to the Taputapuātea marae, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Huahine adds a softer, less-developed stop if you stretch to a longer charter.

Start in Raiatea, sail the shared Raiatea–Taha’a lagoon, run out to Bora Bora for 2 to 3 nights, then loop back through Huahine. It’s the classic 7-day rhythm and the passages stay short.
“My biggest advice is to lock in your May or June dates early — the dry season window with steady trade winds is short, everyone wants it, and the best-crewed boats on the Raiatea base disappear fast; adding a temporary chef on board, as I've done on recent charters, can genuinely elevate the whole trip when the permanent crew is smaller.”

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

The Society Islands suit couples, honeymooners and families who want calm-water cruising, short hops and time in the lagoon — swimming, paddleboarding, snorkeling reef edges, a beach picnic crew can set up ashore. A captain who knows these passes unlocks the parts you can’t reach independently: the better drift-snorkel spots, the right side of Bora Bora’s lagoon at the right hour, the anchorages off the resort circuit.

If you want serious wildlife and expedition cruising, this isn’t the place — for that we’d point you toward Galápagos or Alaska. If you want long blue-water passages and remote diving, the Tuamotus or the wider South Pacific fit better. And if you want flat lagoon water with no open stretches at all, know that the Bora Bora and Huahine legs cross short patches of open sea where the trades make themselves felt.

Best yacht fit: catamaran first

Unlike the Maldives, sailing and power catamarans are plentiful and well-supported here — Raiatea is a major catamaran base. For most guests a crewed catamaran is the right call: shallow draft for the lagoons, stability at anchor, and indoor-outdoor living that fits this kind of cruising. Motor yachts are the alternative if you want more speed and volume.

The sail-versus-power choice has a real running-cost angle. A sailing cat burns roughly 40 litres an hour under power; a power cat is closer to 150, plus the generator. On a short-hop itinerary that difference adds up in the fuel line of your final bill — worth weighing if budget is tight. Boats like BLUE GRIFFIN (a 62ft Lagoon) sit at the accessible end, while BABAC and ARKTOS offer more space for larger groups.

Option Best for Not ideal for Typical base
Sailing catamaran Couples & families, lower fuel cost, calm cruising Tight schedules, large groups $29,000–$96,000/week
Power catamaran Speed between islands, more volume Fuel-conscious budgets Mid-range upward
Motor yacht Pace, space, full-service feel Shallowest lagoon corners, fuel economy $25,000–$420,000/week
“Clients always ask if they should push out to the Tuamotus — Fakarava and Rangiroa are spectacular for diving, but factor in the extra passage time from Pape'ete; for a first charter in French Polynesia, I usually keep it tighter: Moorea, Raiatea, Taha'a, and Bora Bora gives you extraordinary variety without burning half your week just getting there.”

Season, cost and what to book first

Charter May to October. This is the dry season — less humid, steadier south-easterly trade winds, the cleanest conditions for lagoon cruising. June through August is peak, with the most reliable weather and the highest prices; if you can take May or September–October, you get similar conditions with better availability. November to April is warmer and wetter, with brief showers and occasional storms.

On budget: catamarans in the Society Islands run roughly $29,000 to $96,000 per week as a base rate, with motor yachts spanning $25,000 to $420,000. As a rule of thumb, add 50 to 55% on top of the base to cover the APA (fuel, food, drink), French Polynesia’s 5% charter tax, mooring fees and crew gratuity. A $50,000 base lands near $77,000 all-in. See live options under yachts under $100k or, for the lower end, yachts under $40k.

The genuinely suitable fleet here is small, and boats relocate between regions each season. For July and August, reserve 12 months or more before you sail. There’s also a paperwork lead time: the “Grande Plaisance” charter licence takes 7 to 8 weeks to process, which your broker handles — but it’s a reason not to leave bookings late.

FAQ

Are the Society Islands actually atolls?

No. Bora Bora, Raiatea, Taha’a, Moorea and Huahine are volcanic high islands with reef-protected lagoons. The classic atoll cruising — flat coral rings, pass diving — is in the Tuamotus, around Fakarava and Rangiroa, which is a separate trip.

How many days do I need?

Seven nights covers the Leeward loop — Raiatea, Taha’a, Bora Bora and Huahine — at a comfortable pace. If you want it unhurried with room to add Moorea or reach further, 14 nights is the longest length we recommend and gives the most route options.

Should I add Tahiti and Moorea to the same week?

Not in a single week. The passages between the Tahiti/Moorea area and the Leeward Islands are long and eat your charter. Pick one focus per week — the Leeward loop or the Tahiti–Moorea area — or stretch to two weeks to do both properly.

Sailing catamaran or power catamaran?

For most guests, a sailing catamaran. It cruises calmly, suits the short lagoon hops, and burns far less fuel — roughly 40 litres an hour versus around 150 for a power cat. Choose a power cat or motor yacht only if pace and extra volume matter more than running cost.

When is the best time to charter?

May to October. June to August is peak season with the most settled weather and highest prices; May, September and October are the shoulder months with similar conditions, fewer boats and better value. Avoid November to April if you want the driest, steadiest trade winds.
