Quick answer
- Most guests should book the villa: one resort, one atoll, a fixed overwater room with a pool is simpler and far cheaper than a charter.
- Charter a yacht if you want to move: a crewed boat reaches Vaavu, Meemu, Thaa and Laamu reefs that no single resort can put you near.
- The fleet is small: roughly 12 charter yachts, motor-yacht and superyacht dominated. Sailing catamarans are scarce here — expect a motor yacht.
- Dry season is the window: November to April for calm seas and visibility up to 30m; December to March is peak.
- Manta season is May to November: Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll aggregates mantas — a yacht reaches it on the right tide; a resort schedules a day trip.
- Book early: 8 to 12 months ahead for Christmas, New Year and the February–March honeymoon window.

Yacht or villa: which wins?
For most travelers, the overwater villa wins — it is simpler, cheaper, and the Maldives invented the format. You fly to Malé, take a seaplane to one island, and stay put with a pool over the lagoon. If your plan is rest, a spa, and a reef off your deck, a yacht is more boat than you need.
A crewed yacht wins for one reason: movement. A villa fixes you to a single house reef in a single atoll. A yacht crosses 26 atolls, anchors off uninhabited sandbanks, and reaches dive sites like Maaya Thila in Ari Atoll or the manta cleaning stations of Baa that no resort sits beside. If you want the Maldives plural rather than one address, you charter.

Side by side
| Option | Best for | Not ideal for | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overwater villa | Couples, honeymooners, first-timers who want rest and one reef | Groups wanting variety, divers chasing multiple atolls | $700–$1,900/night standard to pool villa; family suites all-in $2,500–$3,500/night |
| Crewed yacht | Families, dive groups, anyone wanting multiple atolls and sandbanks | Solo couples on a budget; anyone wanting a fixed spa routine | Motor yachts roughly $72,000–$120,000/week; superyachts from ~$245,000/week, plus fees |

Where the yacht actually beats the villa
Access. Only 87 of the country’s islands are resorts. The rest — sandbanks, uninhabited reefs, the channels where mantas feed — belong to whoever has a boat. A villa hands you one reef; a yacht hands you a new anchorage every morning.
Diving and snorkeling. The best charter yachts carry multiple tenders and dive support, so you drop in at Maaya Thila at the right current and move to a new wall the next day. This is the case for a dedicated dive-equipped charter yacht over a resort dive centre that runs to the same handful of sites.
What it really costs
Be honest with yourself on budget before you fall for the idea. A standard overwater villa runs $700 to $1,900 a night; a family suite at a top resort, all-in with food and transfers, lands closer to $2,500 to $3,500 a night before excursions. That is a real holiday for two for a fraction of a charter.
A crewed yacht is a different order of money. Maldives motor yachts list from roughly $72,000 to $120,000 per week, with superyachts starting around $245,000. On top of the base rate, budget 16–17% Tourism GST, an APA of 25–40% for fuel and provisioning, 10–20% crew gratuity, and $12 per guest per night green tax. On a $100,000 week that totals roughly $151,000 to $178,000 all-in.

Set expectations now: the Maldives charter fleet is motor-yacht and superyacht dominated — around 12 vessels. Sailing catamarans are scarce and hard to source here. Clients who arrive set on a sailing cat usually get redirected to a motor yacht or a power cat, and that is the right call for these crossings between atolls.
The best-fit boats are purpose-built 30 to 60 metre motor yachts with multiple tenders and proper dive support. PURPOSE, a 54.9m, 6-cabin motor yacht from $270,000 per week, is the kind of platform that does this well — room for the group, the tenders to reach the reefs, and the range to cross atolls in comfort. Browse the full Maldives charter fleet or the broader luxury motor yacht range to see what fits your group.
When to go — and what it changes
Charter the dry season, November to April, with December to March the peak. That is calm seas, low humidity and visibility up to 30m — the right window for both a villa and a yacht. Avoid building a dive-led charter around the wettest southwest-monsoon weeks if visibility is your priority.
The exception is mantas. Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, aggregates manta rays from May to November. A yacht reaches it on the right tide and stays for the feeding window; a resort sells it as a scheduled day trip. If mantas are the whole point, the wet season and a boat make sense together. For a different warm-water comparison, some larger groups also weigh Indonesia and Raja Ampat against the Maldives.
FAQ
Is a yacht charter cheaper than an overwater villa in the Maldives?
No. A couple in an overwater villa pays $700 to $1,900 a night. A crewed motor yacht starts around $72,000 a week before taxes, APA and gratuity. The yacht only makes financial sense for a group sharing the cost, or for travelers who specifically want to move between atolls.
Can I charter a sailing catamaran in the Maldives?
Rarely. The fleet here is motor-yacht and superyacht dominated, with only around 12 charter vessels. Sailing catamarans are scarce and hard to source. For these atoll crossings we usually place clients on a motor yacht or a power catamaran, which suit the conditions better anyway.
What does a Maldives yacht charter let me do that a resort can’t?
Move. A yacht reaches uninhabited sandbanks and dive sites across multiple atolls — Maaya Thila in Ari, the manta channels of Baa, the quieter reefs of Vaavu and Meemu — on your schedule and the right tide. A resort fixes you to one house reef and sells everything else as a day trip.
How far in advance should I book?
For the December to April dry season, 8 to 12 months ahead. The charter fleet is tiny, and Christmas, New Year and the February–March honeymoon window fill first. Last-minute requests inside a few months of sailing rarely find the right boat.
Where should a first-timer’s charter begin?
North and South Malé Atolls. The transfer from Velana airport to the yacht is a 10 to 30 minute speedboat, and you have snorkeling, sandbanks and resort stops close at hand — the easiest introduction before you push out to the wilder southern atolls.
