Quick answer
- Choose Komodo for a first week: fly Bali to Labuan Bajo in about an hour, then sail Pink Beach, Manta Point and Rinca — a week feels complete.
- Choose Raja Ampat for the diving: the richest reefs on earth (Dampier Strait, Wayag, Misool), but reaching Sorong from Jakarta eats a day at each end.
- Komodo season: April to November, peak May to September for manta activity and flat water.
- Raja Ampat season: the dry, calmer months run outside the May to September low season — talk to us for current dive and manta timing.
- Right boat for both: a crewed phinisi or expedition motor yacht — this is tender-led cruising, not marina-hopping.
- Honest note: one week works cleanly in Komodo; in Raja Ampat, 7 nights is a focused single-area route, not the full archipelago.
For most first-time guests with exactly one week, we recommend Komodo. The travel maths is simpler — a short flight from Bali into Labuan Bajo, then straight onto the boat — so more of your seven days is spent cruising rather than in transit. Raja Ampat is the better week only if diving is the real reason for the trip and you accept losing most of a day at each end getting to and from Sorong.
Both sit inside Indonesia and both are cruised almost entirely by crewed phinisi or expedition yacht. The difference is not the boat. It’s what a week actually buys you in each place once travel time is deducted.

Komodo vs Raja Ampat in a week: the honest comparison
The two regions solve different problems. Komodo packs its highlights into a tight cruising ground, so a week lands well. Raja Ampat spreads its best reefs across a huge archipelago, so a week means picking one area and doing it properly.
| Region | Best for | Not ideal for | One-week verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Komodo | First charter, mixed group, dragons + beaches + reefs | Serious divers wanting the world’s richest reefs | Feels complete |
| Raja Ampat | Dedicated divers, remote wilderness, marine biodiversity | Guests who want land and sea in equal measure | A focused taste, not the whole picture |

A 7-day Komodo itinerary
Board in Labuan Bajo and head into Komodo National Park. A good captain sequences the week around tides and light — Pink Beach late in the day when the crushed red coral shows best, Manta Point on a running current when the animals gather at the cleaning stations.
- Days 1–2: Labuan Bajo departure, dragon hike on Rinca with a park ranger, first snorkel reefs.
- Days 3–4: Manta Point drift, Pink Beach, Padar Island lookout at dawn.
- Days 5–6: Komodo island dragon trek, more remote dive and snorkel sites among the 50+ in the park.
- Day 7: cruise back to Labuan Bajo, disembark.

Sample route
A 7-day Raja Ampat itinerary
From Sorong, a single week realistically covers the north — Dampier Strait, the Fam Islands, Penemu and Wayag — or a southern loop toward Misool, but not both well. We usually build the northern route for a first week because the karst lagoons of Wayag and the manta cleaning station at Manta Sandy sit within comfortable range.
- Days 1–2: Sorong departure, dive and snorkel the current-fed reefs of the Dampier Strait.
- Days 3–4: Manta Sandy, Arborek and Friwen villages, Penemu lagoon viewpoint and Melissa’s Garden.
- Days 5–6: north to Wayag for the karst lagoon, the ridge hike lookout and drift diving.
- Day 7: return cruise toward Sorong, disembark.
The tradeoffs that actually decide it
Access. Komodo is roughly an hour’s flight from Bali into Labuan Bajo. Raja Ampat means flying into Sorong, with direct daily service from Jakarta and connections through Makassar or Manado — realistically half a travel day at each end. Over a single week that gap matters.
What you’re there for. Komodo mixes land and sea: dragon hikes, beaches, snorkelling, easy reefs. Raja Ampat is diving-led — coral walls, wobbegongs, pygmy seahorses, mantas, the densest marine life on the planet. If half your group doesn’t dive, Komodo carries the week better.
Season. They run opposite calendars. Komodo is calmest April to November. Raja Ampat’s low season is May to September, when southeasterly weather makes the crossings and anchorages less comfortable, so the calmer diving months sit outside that window. Both regions reward a fully crewed phinisi or a robust expedition motor yacht with local crew who know the currents. Komodo’s tidal flow and Raja Ampat’s remote anchorages both punish the wrong vessel. This is expedition cruising with tenders for reefs, villages and lagoons — not a coastline of marinas.
The Indonesia fleet is small and each boat is different, so we match cabins and layout to your group rather than to a headline price. As a broad guide, crewed catamarans in the region run from roughly USD 20,000 to USD 62,000 per week, and expedition motor yachts and phinisi span from around USD 9,800 up to USD 98,000 per week depending on size, crew and standard. We’ll send current availability and firm pricing for the exact dates you’re considering. Browse the full Indonesia fleet to see the range.
FAQ
Is one week enough for Komodo?
Yes. Because Labuan Bajo is a short flight from Bali and the highlights sit in a compact cruising ground, a 7-night charter covers Pink Beach, Manta Point, Rinca and Komodo comfortably. We’d only push longer if you want the quieter southern dive sites too.
Can I see Misool in a 7-night Raja Ampat charter?
Not without compromise. Misool sits far south of the northern hubs, so fitting it into a week means long motoring days instead of diving. For Misool plus the north, plan 10 nights or more, or run a dedicated southern route.
Which is better for non-divers?
Komodo. It combines dragon hikes, beaches and easy snorkelling with the diving, so a mixed group stays happy. Raja Ampat is diving-led — the surface highlights are real, but the reason to go is what’s underwater.
When should I book?
Early. The best crewed phinisi and expedition yachts in Indonesia are a small, fixed fleet, and the strongest boats for Raja Ampat’s dry season and Komodo’s May to September peak reserve well ahead. Tell us your dates as soon as they’re firm and we’ll quietly reserve the right boats before they go.
Do the two regions share a season?
No — they run largely opposite calendars. Komodo is best April to November. Raja Ampat’s low season is May to September, so its calmer diving months fall outside that window. If your travel dates are fixed, that often decides which region you charter.
