7-Night Crewed Itineraries: Raja Ampat and Komodo Compared

Quick answer

  • Komodo suits one week: a 7-night route from Labuan Bajo covers dragons, Pink Beach and mantas without feeling rushed.
  • Raja Ampat wants more: 7 nights covers Dampier Strait and Wayag, but 10 to 12 nights are needed to add Misool. One week leaves divers wanting more.
  • Opposite seasons: Komodo is best April to November; Raja Ampat is best November to April, peaking December to March, with the absolute peak for mantas in January and February.
  • Book divers into Raja Ampat: it holds the richest reefs on the planet, with the strongest visibility in peak season.
  • The vessel is a crewed phinisi: both regions are led by traditional Indonesian phinisi and expedition motor yachts. A small number of crewed catamarans work these waters, but wooden phinisi remain the standard.
  • Weekly rates: a fully crewed charter starts at roughly $35,000 for a smaller yacht and runs well into the hundreds of thousands for the largest motor yachts, before park fees and expenses.
“The mistake I see most with Raja Ampat is clients assuming they can plan it like a Mediterranean trip — you're routing through Sorong after long-haul connections via Jakarta or Makassar, so build at least a buffer day each end or a delayed flight will cost you a full day on the water.”

Which one-week route wins?

For a single seven-night charter, Komodo is the better fit for most first-timers. It packs land and sea highlights into a tight loop from Labuan Bajo, and a week feels complete. Raja Ampat rewards the more experienced or diving-focused guest, but seven nights only scratches it.

The honest tradeoff: Komodo gives you variety and a satisfying week. Raja Ampat gives you the best reefs on earth, but the distances are large and the highlights are spread out. If diving is the whole point of your trip, we would still send you to Raja Ampat — we would just push you toward 10 nights or more.

Raja Ampat vs Komodo at a glance

Region Best for Not ideal for Ideal length Is 7 nights enough?
Komodo Dragons, Pink Beach, mantas, first-timers who want variety in one week Serious divers chasing the richest reefs 7 nights works well Yes — a full loop fits comfortably
Raja Ampat Diving and snorkelling, karst scenery, remote wilderness Guests who only have one week and want it all 10 to 12 nights Partly — covers the north, but not Misool
“If manta rays are the priority, I push clients toward December through February — the plankton blooms in the Dampier Strait and at Manta Sandy bring the biggest aggregations, and that's when I'd anchor the itinerary in the north rather than defaulting straight to Misool.”

Komodo 7-Night Crewed Charter Route

A Komodo sailing yacht charter route starts and ends at Labuan Bajo on Flores, reached with a short flight from Bali. A week here has a natural rhythm, and the sites sit close enough together that you are not burning days on long crossings.

A typical seven-night structure looks like this:

  • Day 1 — Labuan Bajo: board in the afternoon, settle in, and cruise out to a quiet anchorage near Sebayur or Kanawa for the first snorkel and sunset.
  • Day 2 — Rinca Island: an early ranger-led walk across the savannah trails for dragons, deer and megapode nests, then an afternoon reef dive or snorkel in the sheltered bays.
  • Day 3 — Central channels: current-fed sites such as Batu Bolong and Tatawa for the day’s best diving, timed carefully to slack water by the captain.
  • Day 4 — Komodo Island and Pink Beach: the main dragon hike in the morning, then Pink Beach — crushed red coral mixed with white sand — best late in the day when the colour deepens.
  • Day 5 — Manta Point: a morning at the manta cleaning and feeding grounds, then hilltop walks at Padar Island for the classic three-bay view.
  • Day 6 — Northern reefs: quieter snorkelling and a beach day, with time on the water and a shore barbecue if conditions allow.
  • Day 7 — Return leg: a final dive or snorkel and an easy cruise back toward Labuan Bajo, disembarking the following morning.

Komodo National Park requires entry permits and ranger arrangements for the hikes, which a good crew handles before you arrive. For the wider grounds and vessel options, see our Komodo charter guides.

Komodo’s calm window is April to November, with the strongest conditions May to September. That is the exact opposite of Raja Ampat’s season — useful if your only free window is mid-year.

Raja Ampat Crewed Yacht Itinerary (7 Days)

A crewed catamaran or phinisi Raja Ampat route departs from Sorong, reached via Jakarta, Makassar or Manado. A seven-night route stays in the north and central grounds, since Misool in the far south needs more time.

A typical seven-night northern route looks like this:

  • Day 1 — Sorong to the Dampier Strait: board and cruise into the central crossroads of current-fed reefs, with a first checkout dive near Kri or Mansuar.
  • Day 2 — Dampier Strait: the signature sites — Cape Kri, Blue Magic, Sardine Reef — timed to the tides, with schooling fish and reef sharks.
  • Day 3 — Manta Sandy: a morning at the manta cleaning station, then quieter reefs and a village visit if the crew has arranged it.
  • Day 4 — Fam Islands: the karst lagoons and the hilltop lookout above Piaynemo, plus drift snorkelling through the passages.
  • Day 5 — Wayag: the long cruise north to the iconic limestone lagoons, a hard hike to the panorama, and kayaking among the karst.
  • Day 6 — Kawe and Wofoh: outer reefs and channels on the way back south, with beach time and a shore landing.
  • Day 7 — Return to the Dampier area: a final dive or two before the cruise back toward Sorong, disembarking the next morning.

What a week leaves out is Misool, the remote south with its soft-coral walls, shark nurseries and no-take conservation zone. Reaching Misool and doing it justice needs a proper north-to-south expedition. That is why our guidance for a full Raja Ampat charter is 10 to 12 nights, not seven.

Go December to March for the strongest manta aggregations and the best visibility, with the absolute peak in January and February. November and the shoulder months bring calmer bookings but generally softer visibility, and manta activity is less reliable outside the peak. If wildlife is your priority, aim for the peak window.
“Raja Ampat really isn't a motor yacht destination in the traditional sense — the fleet is phinisi and purpose-built dive liveaboards, and honestly that expedition format suits it perfectly; clients who come expecting a sleek charter yacht experience sometimes need that conversation early so they book the right vessel from the start.”

Which crewed vessel and what it costs

Both regions are led by fully crewed traditional phinisi and purpose-built expedition motor yachts. A small number of crewed catamarans do work these grounds — private, professionally staffed vessels, not the shared budget boats these waters are known for — but wooden phinisi and robust motor yachts remain the standard, built for the strong currents here. A professional captain reads the tides that matter enormously in both regions, and a private chef and dive crew are what make this a genuine crewed charter rather than a shared dive trip.

Cost item Komodo Raja Ampat
Weekly rate (fully crewed) ~USD $35,000 to over $100,000 From ~$20,500 (catamaran) or ~$35,000 up to ~$875,000+ (large motor yacht)
Marine park entry fee Ranger and entry fees, usually arranged by the crew Raja Ampat marine park tag, paid per guest, usually arranged by the crew
Daily extras (fuel, drinks, dive gear, tips) ~USD $150 to $400 per day ~USD $150 to $400 per day
Ideal length 7 nights 10 to 12 nights

Komodo weekly rates run from roughly $35,000 to $40,000 for a simpler crewed yacht up to over $100,000 for a larger luxury vessel. Raja Ampat covers a wider band: a crewed catamaran can start near $20,500, most quality phinisi sit from around $35,000, and the largest expedition motor yachts run to $875,000 or more per week. The Raja Ampat marine park tag is charged per guest and is usually handled by the yacht as part of your final settlement — we confirm the current figure and what is bundled at the time of booking, since park fees are reviewed periodically. Budget roughly $150 to $400 a day on top for fuel, drinks, dive gear and gratuities.

We confirm live availability and current pricing on specific yachts at enquiry, as both the fleet and rates move through the season. Divers should ask us to filter for yachts with scuba diving onboard, and larger parties can see the large-group options. For the wider region, our Indonesia charter guides cover both cruising grounds.

FAQ

Is 7 nights enough for Raja Ampat?

Seven nights covers the Dampier Strait, Wayag and the Fam Islands well, but it leaves out Misool in the south. If diving is your priority, we recommend 10 to 12 nights to do the full north-to-south route justice.

Can I combine Komodo and Raja Ampat in one trip?

They sit far apart with different gateways — Labuan Bajo for Komodo, Sorong for Raja Ampat — so they are separate charters rather than one continuous route. Their opposite seasons make them a natural pair across two different visits.

When should I go to each?

Komodo is best April to November, peaking May to September. Raja Ampat is best November to April, with the peak for mantas and visibility in December to March and the absolute peak in January and February.

Will I definitely see manta rays?

No sighting is guaranteed, but Raja Ampat’s peak season delivers very high manta encounter rates at cleaning stations like Manta Sandy. Activity is less reliable in the shoulder and low months, which is one reason we steer wildlife-focused guests toward December to February.

How far in advance should I book?

The best phinisi and expedition yachts in peak season are reserved 12 to 18 months before you sail. If your trip is less than six months away, your choice of vessel narrows sharply, especially over December to February.
