8-Day vs 15-Day Galápagos Crewed Charter: What Do You Actually See?

Quick answer

  • For most guests: a single 8-day charter on either the eastern or western route — both are complete weeks of headline wildlife.
  • For serious wildlife travellers: the 15-day back-to-back, which combines the eastern and western routes so you see both sides plus the far west, with no repeated landings.
  • The constraint: the National Park assigns your route — you cannot freely design or re-route mid-charter.
  • Why length matters: the east and west are separate approved itineraries; only the 15-day program reliably reaches the remote western volcanoes alongside the eastern islands.
  • Best season: the warm, calmer December–May window for snorkelling and gentler seas; the cool June–November season for whale sharks and hammerheads.
  • Avoid: a 4 or 5-day window if this is your only Galápagos trip — it leaves most guests wanting more.

For most first-time guests, we recommend a single 8-day charter. Each 8-day route — eastern or western — is a self-contained week of around 7 nights, covering the headline wildlife on its side of the archipelago. We only steer guests to the 15-day version when wildlife is the whole point of the trip and they want to combine both routes, reaching Fernandina and the western Isabela coast that a single eastern week never touches.

The thing nobody tells you early enough: the Galápagos is one of the most tightly regulated destinations we charter. Your itinerary is pre-approved by the National Park and cannot be changed once you sail. This is not a flexible private charter where you re-route on a whim — the route is the product, and length is what unlocks more of the archipelago.

Marcelle Hailwax, a DMA charter broker whose clients have called a Galápagos week one where 'every minute exceeded expectations,' flags that the 8-day format suits guests who want a complete northern-to-southern arc — covering sites like Genovesa and Española — without the fatigue that can set in on a 15-day expedition aboard a small motor yacht operating park-assigned routes.

The regulatory reality

How long should a Galápagos crewed charter be?

For most guests, 8 days is the right length. It gives you a full week on one approved route — eastern or western — with the headline wildlife and comfortable pacing. Choose 15 days only if you want both routes combined and the remote western sites a single week can’t reach.

Elsewhere, a private charter means you point at a bay and go. In the Galápagos, every yacht runs a Park-controlled calendar on a fixed eastern or western route, with visitor-site zoning that caps where shorter trips can go.

That is the core reason length matters here more than anywhere else we work. The east and west are not one loop — they are two separate approved itineraries. A single 8-day charter covers one of them well. The 15-day program is what stitches both together and adds the far west. Anything shorter — a 4 or 5-day window — is legally restricted to a narrower set of sites, usually the central and eastern islands, and skips the western volcanoes entirely.

A certified naturalist guide is mandatory onboard for the full charter. That guide occupies a cabin — so the yacht effectively sleeps one cabin fewer in guest terms. Factor it into your headcount before you fall for a layout.

What an 8-day Galápagos crewed charter covers

The 8-day charter is a defined, well-worn product run as one of two routes. The eastern route works a mix such as North Seymour, Bartolomé, Genovesa and San Cristóbal; the western route covers islands like Isabela, Floreana, Santa Cruz and Rábida. You pick a side — you do not get both in a single week.

In a week you get the headline encounters: giant tortoises on Santa Cruz, marine iguanas, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, the red-footed and Nazca colonies on Genovesa, and strong snorkelling with turtles, rays and reef sharks. For most couples and families, one well-chosen route is a complete Galápagos.

If your trip is built around photography or first-time wonder rather than ticking off every remote island, 8 days is the right call. The pacing is comfortable and you are not at sea for long overnight repositions. See our western vs eastern islands guide to choose your side.
According to Louis Lamprell, DMA charter broker and Active CYBA Member, the common mistake on a 15-day Galápagos charter is assuming a larger group can simply extend an 8-day itinerary — in reality the fleet is almost entirely small expedition motor yachts with strict park-controlled routes, so the vessel choice (whether a $149,190 Endemic or a $160,450 Infinity for eight days) matters far more than adding nights.

What a 15-day Galápagos crewed charter buys

The 15-day itinerary is a back-to-back combination of the eastern and western 8-day routes — and the well-built versions repeat no landing site. That is what unlocks both sides plus the far west: Fernandina, the youngest and most volcanic island, and the western coast of Isabela.

These are the sites a single-week guest never reaches. Flightless cormorants and the densest marine iguana colonies sit on Fernandina; in the cool, dry season the cold, nutrient-rich currents of the western channels bring in feeding wildlife, whale sharks and large schools of fish.

It is an under-marketed product, and we think wrongly so. If you have flown this far once and may not return, the second week is the most rewarding upgrade on the table — far more so than chasing a bigger yacht. Our Galápagos remote islands private charter guides walk through the full two-week spread.

8 days vs 15 days at a glance

Option Best for Not ideal for Typical cost
8-day single route First-timers, families, couples wanting the highlights of one side Travellers set on Fernandina and the far west Roughly $63,000–$160,000/week, vessel and dates depending
15-day back-to-back Serious wildlife and dive guests, repeat visitors, no repeated sites Anyone tight on time or treating this as a relaxed beach week Roughly $125,000–$320,000 for the two weeks, vessel depending

Exact figures move with the yacht, group size and season — never trust a single round number for the Galápagos. Shoulder months around April–May and September–November typically run below peak holiday weeks. We confirm live rates before you commit.

Daniel Asmus, DMA charter broker and member of both IYBA and ECPY, advises that the garúa season (June–November) is the sharper choice for a 15-day charter if marine wildlife density is the priority — the Humboldt current brings richer underwater life around Fernandina and Isabela — while the warm-water window from December through May suits families doing an 8-day first visit on vessels like the Grand Majestic or Natural Paradise, where calmer seas ease the transition between park-assigned landing sites.

The fleet you are actually choosing from

Regulation keeps the fleet small. The dominant product is the rugged expedition motor yacht or power catamaran — good range, reliable tenders, built for the crossings between islands, not for lagoon lounging. Free-roaming private routes simply do not exist here.

For an 8-day route with a family or two couples, an expedition-capable vessel such as Grand Majestic sits in the practical sweet spot — expedition-built, with the diving and tender setup the itinerary demands. We confirm current availability and exact cabin counts with you before holding anything, because the bookable fleet shifts season to season.

If you want to weigh layouts by budget, our yachts under $100k and power catamaran lists are the most useful starting points, and divers should filter to yachts with scuba diving onboard.

Common mistakes

  • Defaulting to the shortest window. A 4 or 5-day charter is zoned to fewer sites and almost always leaves guests wishing they had stayed.
  • Expecting flexibility. The Park-approved route is fixed — do not book on the promise of spontaneous re-routing, because there is none.
  • Forgetting the guide cabin. The mandatory naturalist costs you a berth; count guests against guide-adjusted capacity.
  • Booking late. Peak weeks need 12–18 months before you sail, and holiday weeks like Christmas, New Year and Easter can need up to 2 years.
  • Budgeting only the base rate. On top of the headline price you have the Park entrance fee, the transit control card, APA, and the cruising permit — and that permit is a major line item, often running close to the cost of the charter itself. We set this out in full before you sign.

If the Galápagos is one stop in a wider Pacific plan, our itinerary guides and French Polynesia pages help you sequence the wildlife and the beach legs sensibly.

FAQ

Is 8 days long enough for the Galápagos?

Yes, for most guests. An 8-day charter covers a full eastern or western route and the headline wildlife on that side. Choose 15 days only if you specifically want both routes combined, plus Fernandina and the western Isabela coast.

Can I design my own private route in the Galápagos?

No. Every charter follows a National Park-approved eastern or western itinerary with a certified naturalist guide, and it cannot be changed once you sail. Length, not flexibility, is what changes which islands you see.

What’s the best season to go?

The warm, calmer December–May season suits snorkelling, gentler seas and first-time guests. The cool, dry June–November season is choppier but draws whale sharks, hammerheads and active penguins on the cold, nutrient-rich currents. We match the month to whether you prioritise comfort or big pelagic wildlife.

Does the 15-day trip repeat any islands?

A well-built 15-day itinerary is a back-to-back of the eastern and western 8-day routes with no repeated landing sites — two full weeks covering the broadest possible spread of the archipelago.

How far ahead should I book?

Book 12–18 months before you sail for peak periods, and up to 2 years ahead for holiday weeks. The fleet is small and the best yachts and routes get reserved early.
