Quick answer
- What it is: A private, fully-crewed liveaboard yacht that island-hops across the Maldives’ 26 atolls — not a resort transfer or a shared dive boat.
- What’s included: The yacht, captain and crew, chef, insurance, tenders, snorkel gear and routing across the atolls. Fuel, food, drinks and fees come on top via APA.
- Realistic vessel: A 30–60m motor yacht or superyacht. Sailing catamarans are scarce here — most clients book motor.
- Cost: Crewed motor yachts run roughly $62,000 to over $1.1M per week base; serious private charters often land around the $100,000 mark, plus 25–40% APA.
- Best months: December to April for calm seas and 30m visibility; May to November for manta season at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll.
- Minimum: 7 days; book peak dates 8–12 months ahead — the fleet is only about 12 yachts.
A private Maldives yacht charter is a fully-crewed, liveaboard motor yacht that you and your group have to yourselves, moving between dive sites, sandbanks and uninhabited islands across the atolls. That freedom to relocate is the whole point — a resort fixes you to one island and a shared liveaboard fixes you to a dive group’s schedule. A private charter does neither.
For most guests, we recommend a 30–60m motor yacht over any other format. It carries the tenders, dive support and crew that make the routing work, and it stays comfortable in the open channels between atolls. We would not normally build this trip around a sailing catamaran — they barely exist in the Maldives charter fleet and almost always have to be redirected to a motor option.

What the base rate actually covers
The weekly base rate buys the yacht and the people who run it. On a Maldives charter that means the captain, chef, deck and interior crew, the yacht’s insurance, and the standard equipment — tenders, snorkel gear, and usually a generous spread of water toys.
- The yacht and all cabins for your group only
- Full professional crew — captain, chef, stewardesses, deckhands
- Hull and crew insurance
- Tenders, snorkel equipment, and standard toys
- Itinerary planning and daily routing across the atolls

What APA, taxes and extras add
On top of the base rate you pay an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), typically 25–40% of the charter fee. It is a pre-paid credit line, not a fee — the crew draw fuel, food, drinks and port costs from it, and anything unspent is refunded after the charter. Treat it as recoverable, but budget for it in full.
Then come the Maldives-specific charges. Green Tax is $12 per guest per night for charter vessels. Cruising permits cost $1,000 for yachts of 100 gross tonnage or more (smaller boats are currently exempt). Crew gratuity is customary — some yachts ask a minimum of $100 per crew member per week. As a planning rule, add 40–70% on top of the base rate to estimate your real total.

What it costs — real fleet numbers
Maldives motor yacht charters range from roughly $62,000 to over $1.1M per week before expenses, and the fleet is small — only about a dozen charter yachts work these waters. The right number depends on yacht size, season and group, but here is where the real boats sit.
| Vessel type | Best for | Not ideal for | Weekly base |
|---|---|---|---|
| 23–27m motor yacht | Couples, small families, dive-led trips | Groups over 8–10 guests | ~$42,000–$63,000 |
| 30m motor yacht (e.g. Benetti) | Families wanting space and toys | Tight budgets | ~$80,000 |
| 50–60m superyacht | Large groups, full-service luxury | Short, simple trips | $245,000+ |
One yacht that fits the larger, full-service end well is PURPOSE, a 54.9m Trinity motor yacht with 6 cabins from $270,000 per week. If you want to compare options by budget first, our yachts under $100k and luxury yachts lists are the easiest place to start.
What you actually do onboard
The day-to-day is built around the water and the routing. You snorkel and swim straight off the yacht, hop to sandbanks and uninhabited islands, and reposition to the next reef while you eat or sleep. Most guests split their time between the central atolls and one wilder region.
- North & South Malé: easiest start area — simple arrival from Velana, sandbanks and resort-style stops
- Ari Atoll: year-round whale sharks off Maamigili and the widest spread of dive sites in the country
- Baa Atoll: the manta aggregation at Hanifaru Bay during the southwest monsoon
- Northern atolls (Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu): quieter, wilder freediving and reef snorkeling with sharks, rays and turtles
If diving is the priority, ask specifically for a dive-led setup with multiple tenders and onboard support — see our yachts with scuba diving onboard. Big game fishing is also straightforward to arrange between island hops.
Chris de Kock, Charter Broker, Sales Broker, Active CYBA Member at DMA YachtingWhen to go, and how a charter beats a resort
Go December to April for the dry northeast monsoon — calm seas, 28–31°C water and around 30m visibility on outer reefs. May to November is the southwest monsoon: less settled, but this is manta and whale-shark season, and shoulder months like May and November often run at better rates. Booking is the constraint — lock peak dates 8–12 months ahead and manta-season dates 5–7 months ahead.
For most guests we recommend a mid-size motor yacht in the dry season, routed through Malé, Ari and one wilder atoll. We steer larger groups toward the superyacht end or, sometimes, toward Indonesia and Thailand for comparison. Browse the full Maldives charter options when you’re ready to shortlist.
FAQ
How is a private charter different from a liveaboard dive trip?
A liveaboard is a shared boat running a fixed dive schedule with other guests. A private charter is the whole yacht for your group only, with a chef, full crew, and a route you shape day to day around what you want to do — diving, sandbanks, fishing or simply relocating to quieter water.
Can I charter a sailing catamaran in the Maldives?
Rarely. The Maldives charter fleet is motor yacht and superyacht dominated, and sailing catamarans are scarce and hard to source. Most clients asking for one end up on a motor yacht, which is also the better tool for the open channels between atolls.
What’s the minimum charter length?
Seven days is the standard minimum. It also makes practical sense — repositioning between Malé, Ari Atoll and a wilder northern or southern region needs the time to be worthwhile.
Do I get the APA back?
Whatever the crew doesn’t spend on fuel, food, drinks and fees is refunded after the charter. Plan to fund the full 25–40% upfront, but treat the unused balance as recoverable.
Where do charters start?
Guests fly into Velana International Airport near Malé, and most charters begin in the capital atoll area before moving out toward Ari, Baa or the northern atolls.
