Quick answer
- For most guests: a crewed motor yacht wins in the Maldives — the fleet is motor and superyacht dominated, and speed matters across 26 atolls.
- Choose a catamaran if: you have young children and want stability and shallow-draft access to inner-lagoon sandbanks — but expect a hard search, as sailing cats are scarce here.
- Distance reality: motor yachts cruise at 20 to 30+ knots; sailing cats manage 8 to 12, which limits how many atolls you reach.
- Best window: December to April for calm seas and visibility; manta season runs May to November at Hanifaru Bay, Baa Atoll, with the strongest sightings from August to November.
- Best fleet fit: a 30 to 60m purpose-built liveaboard motor yacht or power catamaran with multiple tenders and dive support.
- Start point: most charters begin around Malé; North and South Malé Atolls are the easiest first-charter base.
For most Maldives charters we recommend a crewed motor yacht. The distances between the 26 atolls reward speed, and the local fleet is overwhelmingly motor and superyacht based, so you get the best boats and the widest choice. We only steer guests toward a catamaran when stability and shallow-lagoon access outweigh range — and even then, sailing cats are genuinely hard to source here.
The tradeoff is simple. A motor yacht covers more ground, carries more crew and dive support, and can reach the outer atolls south of Malé without losing a day to transit. A catamaran gives you a steadier platform and can slip into inner-lagoon sandbanks a deeper hull cannot — but it moves slowly, so your itinerary shrinks to one or two atolls.

The honest fleet picture
What the Maldives fleet actually offers
The Maldives charter fleet is small, and the strong majority are 68 to 98ft motor yachts and 100ft+ superyachts with dive compressors and toy garages. Luxury catamarans exist — typically 55ft and up — but they are the exception, not the norm.
This matters when you plan. Clients who arrive set on a sailing catamaran often have to be redirected simply because the boat they want is not there for their dates. If a cat is central to your trip, book early and stay flexible on vessel and week.

Motor yacht vs catamaran at a glance
Here is how the two split across the dimensions that actually change your week on the water.
| Option | Best for | Not ideal for | Typical weekly base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crewed motor yacht | Covering multiple atolls, diving, big-game fishing, larger crew service | Guests wanting the widest, shallowest lagoon access | $72,000 to $120,000 (68 to 98ft); superyachts from $245,000 |
| Crewed catamaran | Families with young children, stability, inner-lagoon sandbanks, indoor-outdoor living | Reaching distant atolls in one week; wide fleet choice | From ~$60,000 (well-equipped, sleeps 8) |
All rates are base fees before expenses. Budget 40 to 70 percent on top for APA (running costs paid in advance), the Tourism GST, the Green Tax, and crew gratuity of 10 to 20 percent. Your broker will confirm current tax rates and the exact figure for your dates.

Who each vessel actually fits
A family with young children: this is the one clear case for a catamaran. The wide beam gives you a stable platform at anchor, easy step-off swimming, and shallow draft to reach inner-lagoon sandbanks other boats can’t. If you can secure one for your week, it’s the more relaxed base for small kids.
A diving-focused couple: go motor yacht, or a dedicated dive-led yacht. You want the range to link Ari Atoll’s whale sharks with the manta sites at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, plus onboard compressors and a proper dive tender. A cat’s slow speed eats into the dive schedule.
A multi-couple group: a 30 to 60m motor yacht wins on space, cabin count, deck areas, and crew-to-guest ratio. It also handles the longer inter-atoll runs comfortably. Browse the luxury yachts and yachts under $100k lists to see the scale on offer.
The tradeoffs that flip the decision
Range and speed. This is the biggest one. A motor yacht at 20 to 30+ knots reaches the outer atolls without burning a day in transit. A sailing cat at 8 to 12 knots realistically confines you to one or two atolls near Malé.
Stability and lagoon access. This is where the catamaran earns its place. The twin-hull platform stays flat at anchor, and the shallow draft opens up inner-lagoon sandbars that deeper-keeled vessels simply cannot approach. Power catamarans deliver much of this while restoring some speed.
Daniel Asmus, Owner, Charter Broker, Active CYBA Member, IYBA, ECPY at DMA YachtingWhat we recommend for a first Maldives charter
For a first charter, start in North and South Malé Atolls. Arrival logistics are simple after you fly into Malé, and you get snorkeling, sandbanks and resort-style stops without long crossings on day one.
Pick the vessel around your priority. Diving and distance across atolls point to a motor yacht; young kids and lagoon time point to a catamaran if one is available. If neither is settled, the motor yacht is the safer default given the fleet reality. Our yacht charter insights cover the wider Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia picture, and the catamarans list shows how these boats work in destinations where cats are more common, such as French Polynesia.
Frequently asked questions
Can I charter a sailing catamaran in the Maldives?
Yes, but they are scarce. The Maldives charter fleet is dominated by motor yachts and superyachts, so sailing catamarans are hard to source and book out early. If a cat is essential, contact us well ahead and stay flexible on dates.
Is a catamaran or motor yacht better for families in the Maldives?
For families with young children, a catamaran is the steadier, easier base thanks to its stable platform and shallow-draft lagoon access. For older kids who dive or families wanting to see several atolls, a motor yacht’s speed and space serve better.
How much does a crewed Maldives charter cost?
Well-equipped catamarans start around $60,000 per week; 68 to 98ft motor yachts run $72,000 to $120,000, and superyachts from $245,000. Add 40 to 70 percent for APA, taxes, and gratuity. Your broker confirms the exact all-in figure for your dates.
When should I book a Maldives yacht charter?
Book 8 to 12 months ahead for peak dry season (December to April), including Christmas, New Year and the February to March honeymoon window. Manta-season charters around Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll — best from August to November — should be booked 5 to 7 months before you sail.
Does the crew handle everything on board?
Yes. Every Maldives charter we place comes with a full professional crew — whether you choose a catamaran or a motor yacht. The crew handles navigation, diving, meals and service throughout, so your only job is to enjoy the water.
