Svalbard vs Greenland: Which Arctic Yacht Charter Is Right for You?

Quick answer

  • Choose Svalbard for wildlife: polar bears, walrus and seabird colonies at close range, all within a 9-day loop from Longyearbyen.
  • Choose Greenland for ice scenery: the Ilulissat icefjord, huge calving glaciers and dramatic fjords along one of the most heavily glaciated coastlines on earth.
  • Both need an ice-capable expedition yacht — a standard Med or Caribbean vessel cannot do either.
  • Go June to August (Svalbard) / late June to early September (Greenland) for midnight sun and open water.
  • Svalbard is VAT-free under the Svalbard Treaty, which keeps entry rates lower than mainland Norway.
  • Book roughly 12 months before you sail — the pool of yachts genuinely suited to Greenland is small.

For most first-time Arctic charter guests, we recommend Svalbard. It gives you the highest wildlife density in the accessible Arctic, a tight 9-day itinerary out of one base, and a working fleet of ice-capable yachts at sensible entry rates. We steer clients toward Greenland when the ice itself is the point — the scale of the glaciers and fjords there is unmatched — and when they accept a smaller yacht pool, longer distances, and higher cost.

Both are true expedition charters, not island-hopping holidays. The vessel’s ice-capability is the gatekeeper in either place. What separates them is what you actually see on deck each morning: dense wildlife encounters versus monumental ice.

“The mistake I see most with first-time Arctic clients is assuming Svalbard and Greenland are interchangeable — they're not. Svalbard gives you easier logistics and genuinely accessible entry points like XUMI from $42,500 a week, whereas Greenland demands a more committed expedition mindset and budget to match.”

Svalbard vs Greenland at a glance

Option Best for Not ideal for Relative cost
Svalbard Polar bears, walrus, seabirds; one-base 9-day loop Guests chasing the biggest glaciers Lower entry point, deeper fleet
Greenland Icefjords, calving glaciers, deep fjord cruising Short trips, limited yacht choice, tighter budgets Higher; small pool pushes rates up

Weekly rates in both regions move with the specific yacht, size, and season, so we quote against live availability rather than a fixed figure. As a rule, Svalbard offers the lower entry point and a broader choice of boats, while Greenland’s smaller fleet carries a premium. Ask us for current pricing on the yachts that fit your dates.

Who Svalbard suits

Svalbard suits guests whose main goal is wildlife at close range, and who want a compact, well-run itinerary. Trips typically run as a 9-day round-trip from Longyearbyen, exploring Spitsbergen and neighbouring islands by zodiac — glacier faces, ice floes, and beaches where walrus haul out.

It is also the more practical choice on cost and logistics. Svalbard is a VAT-free zone under the Svalbard Treaty, so you avoid standard Norwegian tax on goods and services, which keeps rates lower than the mainland. The fleet runs from entry-level ice-capable expedition yachts up to larger all-inclusive expedition vessels with more comfort spaces onboard. We quote specific boats and weekly rates against live availability once we have your dates and party size — tell us what you want and we will show you what is genuinely open. If you want the same wilderness with more comfort, look at our wider luxury expedition yacht options.

Svalbard has tightened its shore-landing and access rules in recent years, including designated landing sites, passenger limits, mandatory specialist guides for shore landings, and restricted helicopter use and icebreaking. The exact requirements change, so any yacht you charter must be set up to comply — we only place clients on operators who are.
“If my clients want true wilderness and don't mind the higher commitment, Greenland is extraordinary — but I always make sure they understand that even entry-level ice-capable yachts there start from around $70,000 a week, and the remoteness means contingency planning is non-negotiable.”

Who Greenland suits

Greenland suits guests who want ice on a scale nowhere else matches. The great majority of the country sits under an ice cap, and the draw is the fjords, the calving glaciers, and icefjords like Ilulissat rather than dense wildlife. This is the choice for repeat polar travellers and photographers who already know they want the ice to dominate the trip.

It asks more of you in return. The pool of yachts genuinely suited to Greenland is small — mostly ice-strengthened superyachts, expedition motor yachts, and a handful of polar-rated catamarans — so choice is limited and rates run higher than Svalbard. Because the pool is small and the July–August window is short, book roughly 12 months before you sail. We will match you to the yachts actually available for your dates and confirm current pricing before you commit.

The tradeoffs that actually matter

Wildlife vs ice. Svalbard wins clearly on wildlife density — polar bears, walrus, and vast seabird colonies within one loop. Greenland wins on ice theatre. Decide which one you want to remember, because no single trip does both at full strength.

Timing changes everything. In Svalbard, early summer lets you push right up to the ice edge; later in the season brings more open water and easier movement. We set client expectations by month before we confirm anything. Greenland’s peak is late June to early September, when long daylight hours light the ice cap and conditions are at their most workable.

Yacht choice and cost. Svalbard has a deeper, more affordable fleet. Greenland’s small pool pushes prices up and demands earlier commitment. Motor yachts also tend to carry a higher Advance Provisioning Allowance — the fund that covers fuel, provisioning, and running costs on top of the base fee — than sailing yachts, because they burn more fuel. We spell out the exact APA on any yacht we quote, so it is worth factoring into either budget from the start.

“For groups who want the full polar spectacle without sacrificing comfort, I point them straight to something like POLARFRONT — 55 metres, up to 12 guests, all-inclusive at €175,000 a week, and she operates in both Svalbard and Greenland, so the itinerary can actually follow the ice rather than fight it.”

Which yacht type works in the Arctic

Both destinations require a polar-ready expedition yacht — the same class used in Antarctica. That means an ice-capable hull, real range, and crew who work these waters. The three broad options are a practical ice-capable expedition yacht, a full-spec expedition superyacht with stabilisers and comfort spaces, or a licensed small expedition ship taken as a full-ship charter.

These are private, fully-crewed charters — you take the whole yacht and crew, which is what gives you flexible anchorages and pacing. A strong onboard naturalist matters more here than guests expect: in Svalbard it is a legal requirement for shore landings, and in Greenland it is the difference between passing a glacier and understanding it. A temporary onboard chef is one of the highest-value additions we make to a polar charter.

If this is your first polar charter and you are torn, we usually start clients in Svalbard, then send them to Greenland the second time. It builds the right expectations for expedition pacing and vessel life. Compare it with warmer expedition itineraries like the Galápagos or Alaska to see where the Arctic fits for you — and browse our full list of expedition regions.

FAQ

Is Svalbard or Greenland better for seeing polar bears?

Svalbard. Wildlife density is its core strength, and polar bear, walrus, and seabird encounters are the main draw across a 9-day Longyearbyen loop. Greenland can produce sightings, but the trip there is built around ice, not wildlife.

When is the best time to charter each destination?

Svalbard’s peak is June to August, with midnight sun and breaking ice. Greenland runs late June to early September. Go earlier in Svalbard’s season if you want to reach the ice edge; later brings more open water.

How far ahead should I book an Arctic charter?

Around 12 months before you sail, especially for Greenland, where the pool of suitable ice-class yachts is small and the peak season is short. Svalbard has a deeper fleet but still books up early for prime summer weeks.

Can one charter cover both Svalbard and Greenland?

Some large expedition yachts operate in both regions across a season, but combining them into a single itinerary means a long, exposed open-water crossing. We would not normally build a first Arctic trip that way — pick one, do it properly, and return for the other.

Why can’t I use a standard luxury yacht in the Arctic?

Because ice, cold, and remoteness demand a polar-ready hull, real range, and specialist crew. Svalbard also enforces strict environmental rules, including limits on the heaviest fuel oils. A standard Med or Caribbean vessel is neither legal nor safe for either destination.
