Quick facts

  • Best for: dramatic scenery, genuine seclusion, wildlife and quiet anchorages — not beach clubs or a sundowner crowd.
  • Start point: Bergen.
  • Ideal length: 7 days minimum for the two headline fjords; 10 days to add Hardangerfjord without rushing.
  • Best yacht type: motor yacht for range and warmth; sailing yacht only if using Norway’s genuinely good summer wind matters to you.
  • Price level: from around US$50,000/week, past US$1,000,000 for the largest yachts, plus VAT and APA.
  • Best season: June to August.

Norway is a fjord charter, not an island-hopping one — narrow, steep, UNESCO-listed water that a yacht reaches in a way a road trip never quite matches. We build most Norway charters around Sognefjord as the spine, with Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord as the two fjords worth building a week around. Norway is the first fully built-out destination in our Nordic & Arctic Europe region.

Why charter Norway

Most of what people come to Norway for by yacht simply isn’t reachable any other way. Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord are both UNESCO sites for the same reason: sheer walls, waterfalls dropping straight into the water, and a scale that a photograph never quite captures. A road can get you to a viewpoint above a fjord. A yacht gets you into it.

It’s also one of the quietest charter grounds we operate in. At sea, you’ll likely never see another superyacht — a genuinely different proposition from a Mediterranean or Caribbean week. That’s the trade Norway asks you to make: fewer beach clubs and marinas, much more scenery and silence. We put it in the same category as our Alaska routes — cold-water, expedition-flavored, and built around what’s outside the yacht rather than what’s on the dock next to it.

Which fjords are worth your week

Sognefjord is the spine we build most Norway itineraries around — at over 200km it’s the longest fjord in the country, deep enough for range, and it holds Nærøyfjord as its showpiece side arm. Geirangerfjord is the fjord most people picture, and it earns that reputation, though the main basin sees cruise-ship traffic in July and August (easily timed around). Hardangerfjord — the world’s third-largest fjord — is a strong supporting leg on a 10-day trip, but too spread out to be the centerpiece of a short one.

For the full fjord-by-fjord comparison, including which is right for which yacht and which to skip, see our Norway Fjord Yacht Charter: Which Fjords Are Worth It guide.

Who Norway is right for

Norway suits guests who want dramatic scenery and real seclusion more than they want a beach-club scene. If your brief is quiet anchorages, kayaking beneath waterfalls, wildlife, and a sense of scale you don’t get anywhere warm, this is one of the strongest cold-water charter grounds we plan. If what you actually want is swimming off the back of the boat and sundowners with other yachts around, this isn’t the right week — look at our French Polynesia or Maldives routes instead.

The season is also genuinely tight. July and early August are when most guests want to be there, and that window sells out early — worth locking in well ahead rather than hoping for late availability.

How a Norway charter usually works

Almost every Norway charter we plan starts in Bergen. A 7-day route runs Sognefjord as the spine with Nærøyfjord and Geirangerfjord as the two set pieces, ending back near Bergen or repositioning north. Ten days adds Hardangerfjord as a supporting leg without compressing the headline fjords.

For a full day-by-day version of this route, see our 7-Day Bergen to Ålesund Fjords Itinerary.

Best yacht fit

For most guests we recommend a motor yacht — it gives you the range and warmth you want on the longer, more exposed repositioning legs between fjords. A sailing yacht is worth it specifically if using Norway’s genuinely good summer wind is part of what you’re after; otherwise it’s not the deciding factor here the way it might be elsewhere. Crew quality matters more in Norway than almost anywhere else we operate — a strong captain who knows the narrower stretches, and a chef who can provision properly for remote legs, routinely turn out to be the best money spent on the whole charter.

What it actually costs

Crewed Norway charters start around US$50,000 per week and run well past US$1,000,000 for the largest yachts. On top of the headline rate, budget for Norwegian VAT and an APA — typically 30-40% above the advertised rate, with fuel the biggest variable on a motor yacht covering longer fjord legs.

“People see 'from $50,000 a week' for a crewed yacht and think that's the full number — it never is. In Norway you're adding 12% VAT on top of the base fee, plus an APA of 30 to 40% for a motor yacht because fuel burn in those fjords is real. Budget for it from day one.”

Norway vs. the alternatives

Guests deciding between a dramatic, cold-water charter and a warm-water one often weigh Norway against Alaska — see our Alaska Yacht Charter guide for the comparison. If the choice is specifically between Norway and a UK/Scottish sailing charter, our Norway vs Scotland guide sets out the tradeoffs directly.

FAQ

When should I charter in Norway?

June to August, for the warmest weather (15-25°C), the midnight sun, and the most settled conditions. April and May are possible on a heated boat but noticeably colder and more rugged.

Motor yacht or sailing yacht for Norway?

Motor yacht, for most guests — it gives you range and warmth on the longer legs between fjords. Choose a sailing yacht if using Norway’s summer wind is genuinely part of the appeal for you.

Is Norway crowded in summer?

Not at sea. The one exception is Geirangerfjord’s main basin in July and August, where cruise ships call — easily avoided by timing your visit early or late in the day.

How many days do I need?

Seven is the minimum to do Nærøyfjord and Geirangerfjord justice using Sognefjord as your spine. Ten lets you add Hardangerfjord as a supporting leg without rushing the rest of the route.
