Summer at Christmas, With the Islands to Yourself

New Zealand is a December to March charter. While the Mediterranean and the Caribbean are closed or crowded, the Bay of Islands sits at 20 degrees in the water, the Marlborough Sounds are flat calm and Fiordland has its short window of settled weather. A week here is a summer week in the northern winter.

The country has three cruising grounds that do not resemble each other. The north is subtropical: 144 islands, warm water, the Poor Knights reef that Cousteau put in his top ten. The middle is the Marlborough Sounds, drowned valleys with vineyards at the end of them. The south is Fiordland, where the mountains drop straight into the sea and the only way to see Milford or Doubtful Sound properly is from a boat.

The fleet is small and it moves. The yachts that charter here spend the southern summer between New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific, so a New Zealand week is planned around which boat is actually in the country for your dates. That is the part we do.

Summer at Christmas, With the Islands to Yourself

Why New Zealand

The draw of New Zealand.

Cove on Urupukapuka Island, Bay of Islands

Warm water in December

The Bay of Islands is the "winterless north". Sea temperature reaches the low twenties in February, which is Mediterranean summer water, three months after the Mediterranean closed.

Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve

A top ten dive site with no crowds

The Poor Knights have been a marine reserve since 1981 and Jacques Cousteau rated them among the ten best dives in the world. Nobody lands there. You dive from the yacht, 43 nautical miles from the Bay of Islands.

Vineyard terrace on Waiheke Island

Wine you reach by tender

Waiheke's vineyards are a 30-minute run from Auckland's marina. The Marlborough Sounds put you in Sauvignon Blanc country by water, with lodges like Bay of Many Coves that have no road at all.

Mitre Peak, Milford Sound

Fiords from the water, not the tour boat

Milford and Doubtful Sound are in Fiordland National Park, a World Heritage area with several metres of rain a year. A private yacht is the only way to be there when the day boats have gone.

Bay of Islands and Northland
Bay of Islands and Northland

The subtropical north, three hours' drive or a short flight from Auckland to Kerikeri. 144 islands in a sheltered bay, Russell's 19th-century waterfront, the Hole in the Rock at Cape Brett and Whangaroa Harbour, an entrance hidden between overlapping cliffs that opens into water flatter than a lake. This is the warmest and easiest New Zealand charter, and the one to book if you want a swimming week. The Poor Knights are a day trip south. Swimming with the resident bottlenose dolphins has been prohibited since 2019 to protect them; you will see them from the deck, not the water.

Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf
Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf

The City of Sails is the country's superyacht base and the natural start point. Waiheke's vineyards are half an hour from the marina, Kawau Island and Bon Accord Harbour 25 miles, and Great Barrier Island 60 miles, the first island in the world designated a Dark Sky Sanctuary. Smokehouse Bay on Great Barrier is reachable only by boat and has a wood-fired bath for anyone who arrives by dinghy. A week from Auckland covers the Gulf, the Coromandel and the Mercury Islands without a long passage.

Marlborough Sounds and Abel Tasman
Marlborough Sounds and Abel Tasman

At the top of the South Island, three drowned river valleys: Queen Charlotte, Kenepuru and Pelorus Sound. Dense bush to the waterline, jetties and boat sheds instead of villages, Hector's dolphins, the smallest in the world, riding the bow wave. Lodges here are reached by sea. Fly into Blenheim and board at Picton; Abel Tasman National Park and its golden beaches are a day's cruise west.

Fiordland
Fiordland

Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound, the deep south. Sheer walls, waterfalls after rain (and it rains most days), seals on the rocks and cold, dark water. This is the expedition end of New Zealand: a separate trip from the north, usually flown into via Queenstown, and best from February to March when the weather settles. The reward is a place most visitors see for 90 minutes from a tour boat, and you have overnight.

The Coromandel and Mercury Islands
The Coromandel and Mercury Islands

East of Auckland: kauri forest, white sand at Cathedral Cove, hot springs on the beach and the Mercury Islands, where Great Mercury is privately owned and the outer islands are nature reserves with caves and pinnacles for diving. Usually folded into a Hauraki Gulf week rather than booked on its own.

Signature New Zealand Yacht Charter Experiences

Hide in Whangaroa Harbour

The entrance is concealed between overlapping cliffs and the harbour inside is flatter than a lake. Anchor under St Paul’s Rock, kayak the mangrove creeks at full tide and fish the marlin grounds outside the heads.

WHERE Northland, 31 nautical miles north of the Bay of Islands.

Sail the Hauraki Gulf from the City of Sails

Auckland is the country’s superyacht base. Start with a night off Waiheke’s vineyards, then run out to Kawau, the bird sanctuary at Tiritiri Matangi and Great Barrier Island, where the sky is dark enough to be a sanctuary too.

WHERE Auckland, Waiheke, Kawau, Great Barrier Island.

Eat at a lodge with no road

The Marlborough Sounds have jetties where other coasts have car parks. Bay of Many Coves and Punga Cove are reached by sea, the Sauvignon Blanc is grown ten miles away and Hector’s dolphins ride the bow on the way in.

WHERE Queen Charlotte Sound, from Picton.

Stay the night in a fiord

The day boats leave Milford and Doubtful Sound by late afternoon. A yacht stays: waterfalls after rain, seals on the rocks, and a silence the tour schedule never allows. Cold water, big scenery, February and March.

WHERE Fiordland National Park, via Queenstown.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions.

When is the yacht charter season in New Zealand?

December to March, the southern summer. The wider window runs November to April. Christmas and New Year are peak, with Auckland's own boats out in the Gulf; February and March are the settled months and the only reliable window for Fiordland.

Can a foreign-flagged superyacht charter in New Zealand?

Yes. A visiting yacht enters on a Temporary Import Entry, valid up to 24 months, and can charter commercially for up to 65 percent of its stay with consent from Maritime New Zealand, Customs and Inland Revenue. Most visiting superyachts that charter here are on exactly this arrangement, which is why the fleet changes every season.

How much does a yacht charter in New Zealand cost?

From around USD 70,000 a week for a large crewed catamaran to USD 250,000 and above for a 50-metre superyacht, plus an advance provisioning allowance of 20 to 35 percent and New Zealand GST of 15 percent on the charter fee. We confirm the exact terms per yacht.

Where do I fly in for a New Zealand yacht charter?

Auckland for the Hauraki Gulf and the Bay of Islands (or on to Kerikeri, about 40 minutes). Blenheim for the Marlborough Sounds, with boarding at Picton. Queenstown for Fiordland. All three are domestic hops from Auckland or Christchurch.

Can I do the Bay of Islands and Fiordland in one week?

No. They sit at opposite ends of the country with the open west coast between them. A week is one ground: the north for warm water, the Sounds for wine and calm, Fiordland for scenery. Two weeks can pair the north with the Sounds; Fiordland is its own trip.
