Why this route?
This route is based on my own sailing in northern Raja Ampat, and it goes to some of my absolute favorite places in the area. I would leave Misool out of a one-week charter because it sits too far south; if you try to squeeze it in, you lose too much time on transfers and the itinerary stops being enjoyable. Staying north gives you the good stuff without forcing the week: Cape Kri and the Dampier Strait for some of the best diving and snorkeling, the Fam Islands for lagoon color and shore time, Wayag for the karst scenery, and Wofoh for a quieter final stretch. It is an active, water-led route, but it is also easy to love from the surface: stunning scenery, strong reef life, good access from Sorong, and enough time ashore to make the trip feel like more than a dive schedule.
Daily overview
Day 1 · Sorong to Dampier Strait
Board in Sorong and make the first move into the reefs
The charter begins in Sorong, the practical gateway into Raja Ampat. After boarding, the crew handles briefings, dive setup, tender operations, and the first move into the Dampier Strait.
This is a setup day, but an important one. Raja Ampat is not marina-hopping; it is liveaboard expedition cruising. A calm first afternoon gives everyone time to settle into the yacht, equipment, currents, and the rhythm of moving between reefs.
Day 2 · Cape Kri and Dampier Strait
Dive Cape Kri and the current-fed heart of Raja Ampat
Spend the day around the Dampier Strait, where nutrient-rich currents feed some of the most famous reef systems in Raja Ampat. Cape Kri is the headline site, known for extraordinary fish density and the kind of marine life that makes this region a serious diving destination.
For non-divers, the same water can still deliver excellent snorkeling, tender runs, and reef time. The crew and guide team shape the day around current, visibility, and experience level, which is exactly why a private crewed yacht works so well here.
Day 3 · Dampier Strait to Fam Islands
Move toward the Fam Islands for lagoons and reef color
From the Dampier Strait, the yacht works toward the Fam Islands, a compact and photogenic part of the northern route. The appeal here is the mix of reef color, shallow lagoon scenery, and calmer pockets of water.
This is a useful shift in pace after the current-fed energy of Dampier. Guests can dive, snorkel, take a tender through the lagoons, or climb for views over the islands when conditions and timing line up.
Day 4 · Fam Islands
Stay in the Fam Islands for a slower reef day
A second day in the Fam Islands keeps the itinerary from becoming a race. The yacht can choose the best reef windows, revisit a strong site in better light, or use the day for a quieter lagoon and beach rhythm.
This is also where Raja Ampat starts to feel personal rather than simply famous. With the right crew, the day is shaped around what the group is enjoying most: underwater time, tender exploration, photography, or just being anchored inside improbable blue water.
Day 5 · Wayag
Reach Wayag for the karst lagoon and summit view
Wayag is the postcard day of the northern route: mushroom-shaped limestone islands, blue lagoons, reef edges, and the viewpoint that appears in almost every Raja Ampat dream image. It is remote, beautiful, and worth building the route around.
The best version of the day combines a tender run through the lagoon, a viewpoint hike for guests who want it, and time in the water when conditions are right. It is the clear visual climax of the week.
Day 6 · Wayag to Wofoh
Cruise back toward Wofoh for quiet reefs and a softer evening
After Wayag, the yacht begins working back toward Sorong with a stop around Wofoh. This leg gives the route a natural return rhythm without feeling like a plain transfer day.
Wofoh is useful because it can offer quieter reefs, beach time, and a calmer anchorage after the drama of Wayag. It is a good day to let the yacht, the water, and the last full evening carry the experience.
Day 7 · Wofoh to Sorong
Finish with final dives before returning to Sorong
The final day is a slow return toward Sorong, with room for a last snorkel or dive if flight timing and conditions allow. The crew manages equipment, transfers, and departure practicalities while guests ease out of the islands.
By this point, the week has stayed honest: strong northern Raja Ampat coverage, iconic scenery, serious reef time, and no rushed crossing south to Misool. For many first-time charters here, that is the better trip.
Plan it with a broker
Make this Raja Ampat route fit the right yacht, season, and dive program.
Raja Ampat is one of those destinations where the yacht choice and route timing genuinely change the trip. Our team can help compare phinisi yachts, dive-led liveaboards, and the rarer motor yacht or catamaran options, then shape the week around season, currents, flight buffers, tender operations, and whether your group is serious about diving or wants a softer mixed itinerary.
